CEFR (A1–C2)
The European scale of language levels, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (near-native). The first 1000 words span A1 into A2.
The Common European Framework of Reference describes language ability in six levels: A1 and A2 (basic user), B1 and B2 (independent user), C1 and C2 (proficient user). Exams, textbooks, and apps across the world anchor to it.
Rough vocabulary equivalents: A1 is commonly associated with the first 500-1000 words, A2 with 1000-2000, and B1 with 2500-3000. Finishing the first 1000 by frequency puts a learner at a solid A1 heading into A2, able to handle everyday transactions and simple conversation.
